YouTube entrepreneur and spiritual conquistador Sky Cowans goes behind the scenes of how her channel “Sky Life” developed into a flourishing community.

Q; I’m inspired by your YouTube channel “Sky Life” because you seek out subjects that contrast traditional life. How did you come up with the idea for your page?

A: I started my channel because I was passionate about sharing health and wellness topics. When I put my health and wellbeing first, everything else seems to fall into place and becomes easier. I was curious about the science behind different wellness trends, and I wanted to see if they could actually work and improve my life. I started documenting what I learned, looking at the scientific literature, and diving into that.

I found that spiritual health is one of the most important factors of wellness. So much of our lives is run by our subconscious. Until we start to do deep healing by bringing awareness to it and breaking old patterns from past lives, childhood trauma, etc. — then we’re sort of just running a loop. I started gaining awareness of what was going on beneath the surface, and the channel started expanding through these different spiritual topics.

It all started with my curiosity. I was curious about wellness trends at first, but it expanded when I realized how much more is out there to discover. Now I’m curious about other areas such as witches, UFOs, eco-communities, off-grid living, and alternative lifestyles of people living completely outside the matrix. Overall, I want to learn and teach about the power of curiosity. If we can shift from judgment to curiosity, think of how much we would get to learn about ourselves and each other.

Q: Was there a moment where you decided that this was your project?

A: When I was in college, I studied television news and interned at a news station. I loved a lot of aspects of news such as storytelling, researching, reporting, interviewing people, and getting out there and adventuring. However, I felt a lot of dissonance with the news industry because of how dark it has become with a perpetuation of fear. I didn’t see it as healing in any way. I found myself extremely depressed during that time, and it wasn’t serving me at all.

I loved making videos and the storytelling aspects of news, but I wanted to do it about different content. I was so scared to leave because I was on track to work in the news industry. I didn’t know anything about how you could make money on the internet, become a YouTuber, or how to be an entrepreneur. I was so lost and thought, “if I don’t go into news, what am I going to do?”

Then I had an awakening during my last year of university that this path wasn’t for me. I woke up in the middle of the night of a new moon and the message was so clear: I needed to move to Los Angeles. It was the clearest message I’ve ever received, a literal wakeup call. A month later I got everything ready and just moved. I didn’t have a plan, but I ended up working at BuzzFeed. That’s when I started working on my videos and launched my YouTube channel. When I launched my channel, I committed to posting every week no matter what. Making that decision and commitment lead to success.

Q: I think a lot of creators today experience hesitation because they have to wear every hat, but you’ve developed a team around your channel. How did you take steps toward making this a tribe?

A: It’s literally impossible to do alone. As a content creator, in order to grow and expand you have to start building a team. That way I can focus on what I’m best at and be in my zone of genius.

I would advise people to outsource earlier than you think you need to. I waited too long. Outsourcing and building a team is important if you want sustainable growth. I think I was too attached to doing it alone for a while, but now I would recommend doing it as soon as you can.

Q: Now that you have made momentum, built your team, and found your zone of genius, what is coming up for Sky Life that you are excited about?

A: I’m so excited about the community because I’m getting to connect with people on a way deeper level than ever before. Our Discord is a super cool a place where people can connect off social media. It is becoming an ecosystem with tons of different interests from magic and witchcraft to the Wim Hof method, meditation, yoga, manifestation, extraterrestrials, aliens and so much more.

Whatever you’re into, we’re creating an ecosystem for all of it where you get to choose your own adventure. It is so fun to watch the community take on a life of its own that is so far beyond me. Now people can explore and connect on these topics we’re curious, interested, and passionate about and we get to co-create it together.
